All Roman Jacques Cricket Bats are made from the finest English Willow .
The English Willow comes to the manufacturer in a rough sawn block. It is worked to a width of 4 & 1/4". The wood is then rolled and compacts the face of the blade establishing the appropriate hardness for the job. We then cut the splice or "V" into the blade to fit the handle.
To make the handle we split the cane and laminate three rubbers into that part of the handle from the top of the splice to the top of the handle. This provides the necessary flex or "give" for the bats to function at their best. We then turn the handle on the lathe, cut the splice or "V" and finish by gluing the handle into the blade.
The hand tools used are the drawknife, hand plane, spokeshave and rasp.
With the handle now fitted into the block we handcraft the blade and handle to the shape and weight required. We then balance the bat by taking willow off the lower part until the pick up is right. Once the balance is correct we smooth out the lines of the bat so that the look and feel is unified. The rough marks on the bat are smoothed over with the spokeshave prior to sanding. The bat is then sanded to a silky finish.
Not satisfied with other bats on the market we now supply our own hand-made models. All bats are cut from Grade I English willow. The Maharaja being the cream of the crop as our top of the range bat with a distinctive and almost unique shape. This bat was designed by ourselves after hours of consultation with our bat makers. The final product has surpassed itself and even surprised ourselves. Superbly balanced with an excellent pickup, but because of the unique swell on the rear, no power is sacrificed. Expect something really special.
